The Los Angeles Lakers have struck out in free agency thus far. Despite targeting a number of big names, no one has agreed to come to the Lakers as of yet.

With options getting thinner, the Lakers reached out to point guard Rajon Rondo according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne:
A call is just a call… but heard the Lakers did call Rajon Rondo today to touch base.

Rondo is one of the few big names that has yet to sign a deal in free agency. It was rumored that the Lakers were not interested in Rondo after drafting point guard D’Angelo Russell with the second pick, but perhaps the team is re-thinking its position.
The one team who has been consistently linked to Rondo to this point is the Sacramento Kings who reportedly met with Rondo already. Though calling him doesn’t mean the Lakers are now interested in signing him, it could represent a change in mindset for the organization.
It is believed that Rondo would prefer a short-term contract in order to re-build his reputation and hit the free agency market again next summer when the salary cap is set to jump. That would likely be something the Lakers are interested in as they surely want to keep cap space open for next summer.
The Lakers’ off-season has not gone as planned in free agency so far. The team will continue to look towards any moves they could make to improve the roster and calling Rondo was likely just that.
