The Lakers and former player and coach Kurt Rambis appear to be closing in on a reunion of sorts that would send Rambis back to the bench as a member of Mike D’Antoni’s staff.
According to Drew Garrison of SB Nation, the Lakers and Rambis are moving closer to a deal that would bring Rambis back to the Lakers as an assistant coach. This has been widely rumored recently, as Rambis has been seen with Mike D’Antoni and General Manager Mitch Kupchak watching the Lakers’ Summer League team in action in Las Vegas.

Though the deal with Rambis appears imminent, the role Rambis will serve on the staff remains unclear. In his previous terms with the Lakers, Rambis spent the majority of his time focusing on defensive scheming.

If Rambis does indeed sign on with the Lakers, it would be his third stint with the team, most recently serving under Phil Jackson from 2005-2009, helping bring the Lakers to two NBA Finals, in 2008 and 2009, the latter of which the Lakers won.
The reported near signing of Rambis to help coach the Lakers does indeed suggest that Phil Jackson may be having a larger impact on the Lakers’ basketball operations than previously reported, which is a sign that should excite Laker fans everywhere.
