After a horrible first-half of the season, the Los Angeles Lakers are currently sporting an ugly 17-24 record coming into Wednesday night’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies.
The record and the current lack of chemistry within the team is unacceptable. The new-look Lakers were thought to do big things with Steve Nash and Dwight Howard added to the lineup and the team has only gotten worse.
Along with the team flirting with missing the playoffs altogether, the Lakers might also become very active over the next few weeks leading up to the NBA trade deadline on Feb. 21. Pau Gasol has been the one player on the team that has been rumored to be move at the deadline without any change to the team’s progression and now it appears that Howard might also be on his way out.
The thought of the Lakers trading Howard during the midpoint of the season after giving up Andrew Bynum to acquiring him in the off-season didn’t seem possible. Howard was brought in to take over as the face of the franchise for Kobe Bryant once the five-time NBA champion decided to call it a career and now it seems as though the team might be considering trading Howard if they feel he won’t stick around for the long-term.
In an effort to clear the air, a team meeting was held on Wednesday with the players venting about their frustrations of the season. Steve Nash got a few words in with an emphasis on doing whatever it takes to right the ship while Kobe stole the show by confronting Howard.
Kobe asked if Howard disliked playing with him and the veteran guard didn’t get much of a response. Howard did appear motivated and ready to turn things around immediately after the meeting, but it remains to be seen whether or not that mentality is seen on the floor against the Grizzlies.
