The start of NBA free agency is less than a month away with Dwight Howard of the Los Angeles Lakers at the center of all the talk and speculation as arguably the most sought after free agent. Although superstar point guard Chris Paul is receiving interest heading into free agency, Dwight is the one player of the two in Los Angeles that seems to be on the fence about coming back.
The Houston Rockets have emerged as legitimate contenders to sign Dwight in free agency. Houston has been making moves and making their intentions known that they will be going after Dwight once he’s officially a free agent on July 1.
Initially, the Rockets pursuing Dwight seemed like a ridiculous concept with few believing he’d consider playing in Houston for less money. Now Dwight’s stance has changed with the Rockets becoming an intriguing option and for good reason.
Houston was able to finally turn the corner during the 2012-13 NBA season after acquiring James Harden from the Oklahoma City Thunder. The addition of Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik were also steps in the right direction for the struggling NBA franchise and bringing in Dwight might be enough to put this team in the contender conversation with the top tier teams in the Western Conference.
Only time will tell if the Rockets or other teams like the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors prove to truly be a threat to the Lakers hopes of re-signing Dwight, but as of right now it appears the Lakers will have an uphill battle ahead.
