After the departure of Dwight Howard and the team choosing to amnesty Metta World Peace, the Los Angeles Lakers have gone in a different direction with cheaper options.
The first move the team made was signing veteran center Chris Kaman. The move was reasonable and a decent option for the Lakers, but the next move took everyone by surprise. The Lakers were able to convince 28-year-old scorer Nick Young to take a considerable pay cut in order to play in Los Angeles once again, but even though it appeared to be a one-year deal, it was actually two with a player option for the second year.
The main goal for the Lakers’ front office heading into the offseason was to limit contracts that will carry over into 2014. With such a talented free agent class led by LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, the Lakers wanted as much cap space as possible to bring in one or two of the superstars that will potentially become available.
With that being said, Young’s deal being two years instead of one was unexpected, but still a wise considering that it’s not a big investment and Young can simply leave after one year.
As of right now, only Young, Steve Nash and Robert Sacre are on the books after next season, but the team isn’t done wheeling and dealing with more players likely to be signed this summer.
