Lakers Rumors: Team Discussing Dwight Howard, Rajon Rondo Trade?

NBA: Miami Heat at Los Angeles LakersKen Berger of CBS sports recently reported that trade talks between the Lakers and the Boston Celtics have commenced with Dwight Howard and Rajon Rondo both being center pieces of a proposed deal.

However, CBSSports.com has learned that the Lakers have engaged in preliminary trade discussions with an unlikely trade partner regarding Howard: their fierce rival, the Boston Celtics. The centerpieces of the possible deal, which hasn’t gained any traction, would be Howard and Rajon Rondo.

This is certainly a bombshell on top of what has been said the past week. General Manager Mitch Kupchack has repeatedly told Dwight that:

Howard said Friday that Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak has told him he does not want to trade the free agent-to-be. It’s the same message Kupchak delivered in a recent interview with Newsday and the same message he’s given Howard’s agent, Dan Fegan, in recent weeks.

Other pieces would certainly have to be added with Rajon earning $11 million and Dwight earning $19.5 million. Discussions about Rondo’s injury would also take place considering the Celtics believe he will be ready by training camp even if that could be farther from the truth. Another reason, among the list of them, as to why this trade would not work is Dwight’s uncertainty.

It is a foregone conclusion that GM Danny Ainge will not trade for Dwight unless he is willing to sign long term with the Celtics. However Dwight is certainly someone whom they can rebuild around quicker than Rondo.

It’s unlikely this trade goes through, especially with Rondo out for the season. But the fact that the Lakers seem to be actively shopping Howard comes as a bit of a surprise.
