According to Ken Berger of CBS Sports, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak may be interested in taking a closer look at free agent guard Gilbert Arenas.

Arenas, who most recently played for the Orlando Magic in 2010, is currently without a team but looking to return to the NBA this season. Arenas was a victim of the newly instated amnesty clause, and has faced numerous knee injuries over the past several seasons.

Still, Berger is reporting that Kupchak is interested in attending a workout session Arenas may be holding in Los Angeles this week.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak is awaiting word on details of a workout Gilbert Arenas is planning in Los Angeles later this week and is open-minded about attending, two people with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com Wednesday.

Although the Lakers have publicly been noncommittal about whether to pursue the three-time All-Star, Kupchak has nothing to lose by evaluating Arenas as a potential solution to the team’s point guard woes. The workout date has not yet been set, but Kupchak is said to be willing to attend depending on timing and logistics.

The Lakers’ point guard woes have certainly been public knowledge thus far in 2012, but with Steve Blake expected back soon the need for an aging guard with knee problems might not be as urgent.
