It’s no secret that the Lakers lacked team speed last season as they had an aging backcourt mixed with an older group of supporting members.
In an effort to build on their speed, the Lakers could use their second-round pick on Louisville guard Peyton Siva. Siva has already worked out for the team and is a target at pick number 48.

Siva averaged 10 points for national champion Louisville Cardinals and did have moments of poor judgement, but he would be a nice fit in the Lakers offense.
Why He Fits:
Siva is a coast-to-coast player and someone that would be able to push the tempo. He’d be a great change-of-pace guard to Steve Nash and Steve Blake and with Kobe Bryant saying he won’t be back until November or December, he’d jump right in.
With the Lakers being such an old team, Siva would infuse some youth and athleticism into an aging roster. If Dwight Howard does re-sign in the off-season, he would benefit from a young guard allowing him to get out and run.
Also, the Lakers have a decision to make as to whether or not they’ll retain guard Darius Morris. If Morris isn’t brought back, then drafting Siva would make even more sense.
Whether or not D’Antoni tries to make the Lakers offense more up-tempo with a full training camp remains to be seen, but Siva would be a nice addition to an aging backcourt.
What They’re Saying:
While Siva struggles at times on the offensive end, he’s shown an ability on the defensive end to shut down quality point guards. During Louisville’s run, Siva guarded and tried to contain Trey Burke, Elijah Johnson, Quinn Cook and Domonic Artis.
Matt Kamalsky of Draft Express had this to say about Siva:
“Despite the limitations of Siva’s current offensive skill set, his defensive ability and outstanding intangibles certainly give him a fighting chance at making a roster and sticking around as a second or third point guard.”
Siva’s defensive intensity would be a welcomed addition to the Lakers backcourt and he would help guard Russell Westbrook, Tony Parker and other young quick guards in the Western Conference.
Bottom Line:
Siva should be there when the Lakers have their pick at 48, and it’ll be up to management if he’s a good fit. A lot will have to do with Morris and his situation as it’s unlikely Mitch Kupchak will want to carry four point guards.
