5-2-13-jeff-hornacek-apThe Phoenix Suns are on the verge of hiring former Jazz and Suns guard Jeff Hornacek to be the team’s next head coach. Hornacek has spent the last couple seasons in Utah on Ty Corbin’s bench before emerging as the lead candidate in Phoenix.

Hornacek played six of his 14 seasons as a player in Phoenix and brings a fresh mindset to the job in Phoenix. The Suns hit a home run in hiring former Celtics assistant GM Ryan McDonough and look to be infusing energy into the team.

After an awful 25-57 season last year, the Suns will be picking fifth in the NBA Draft and have six first-round picks in the next three years. Besides guard Goran Dragic, the roster isn’t great and with a new regime in place, there should be significant personnel changes.

Houston assistant coach J.B. Bickerstaff and Lakers assistant Steve Clifford have also interviewed for the job, but it sounds like Hornacek is close to landing his first head coaching job in the valley of the sun.
