But now, according to Michael Grange of SportsNet.ca (h/t to Kurt Helin of NBC Pro Basketball Talk), Jackson and the Raptors won’t be tying the knot anytime soon.
One name that can be crossed off any lists, sources say, is Phil Jackson. The 11-time NBA champion head coach won six titles working with Leiweke in Los Angeles and the two are friends, but the likelihood of Jackson relocating to Toronto and taking on a full-time role as a club executive are considered remote at this point.
In reality it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise that Jackson isn’t interested in a job with the Raptors. Phil is notorious for picking his spots carefully, considering all the circumstances of a franchise before jumping into anything. The Raptors are a team that has only won one division title (2007) in franchise history. Not exactly Phil Jackson material.
The fact that Jackson’s name has been linked to so many jobs around the league lately probably is an indication that he is ready to get back in the game, but so far we’ve heard nothing but no from sources surrounding the 11-time championship winning coach.
Wherever Jackson ends up, however, is sure to benefit from his expertise and experience, even if it’s in a role he hasn’t played before, such as team president or another front office position.
