On This Day In Lakers History: Pau Gasol Traded To Los Angeles

Pau Gasol

Despite the fact that times are pretty hard for Lakers fans, it’s fun to take a moment to reflect and look back on some of the good things that have happened in the history of this storied franchise.

On this day, six years ago, the Lakers shocked the sports world when they acquired a perennial All-Star in Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Aaron McKie, the rights to Marc Gasol, and first round draft picks in 2008 and 2010. A blockbuster deal to say the least.

During the first half of the 2007-2008 season, the Lakers had proven to be a playoff team as young center Andrew Bynum had elevated his game to another level to compliment Kobe Bryant. Gasol was the missing piece that the Lakers needed to legitimately place themselves into title contention. His acquisition would prove to be a turning point in this franchise, as the Lakers would make it to the NBA Finals three years in a row between 2008-2010. They won back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010.

Gasol’s place in Lakers lore is often taken for granted because of his recent struggles, and this is likely due to the fact that he’s constantly in trade rumors. However in his six years here, he’s cemented a legacy within this franchise.

He’s a Laker legend and when it’s all said and done, he will soon have his jersey hanging in the rafters at Staples Center.
