Pete Carril Believes Lakers Can Run Princeton Offense

Perfecting the Princeton Offense is a complicated process and not every coach can get his players to execute it effectively. Just like the Triangle Offense made famous by Phil Jackson, the Princeton is another complicated scheme that requires certain players and coaches.

Next season, the Los Angeles Lakers will be implementing a little Princeton Offense into their playbook thanks to the addition of assistant coach Eddie Jordan. Still, some people have doubted whether or not this Lakers team can succeed under the offense. However, Pete Carril, the man who perfected the Princeton Offense, believes the Lakers have the personnel to correctly run the system.

Carril spoke to Sports Illustrated and talked about the upcoming season for the Lakers. He says Los Angeles has the ingredients to run the Princeton Offense, and it is up to the players and coaches to stick to the plan.

I imagine that if the [Lakers] guys want to do it, and [the coaches] can convince them that it’d better for them, I think they’ll do it. They have the right ingredients, all the passers. They have really good passers there.

The Lakers have perhaps the best passing big man in Pau Gasol and an elite point guard in Steve Nash. Luckily, the Lakers can also use Nash and Jodie Meeks for their incredible outside shooting. And there is Kobe Bryant, one of the best players in the NBA and a leader who is willing to transform his game in order to help the Lakers win a championship.

With this new offense, Kobe will get easier looks at the basket and in turn become a more efficient player. As the years have progressed, Bryant has been taking some very difficult shots, but with the additions of Nash and the new offense, Bryant will have a lot of fun in the 2012-13 season.

The Los Angeles Lakers have won five NBA championships under the Triangle Offense, and now it is time to see if they can experience the same success with the famous Princeton Offense.
