Only 23 games remain for the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2013-14 NBA season with the playoffs out of the question for the storied franchise.

With the window quickly closing on the most disappointing season in recent memory, Steve Nash might also be seeing his Hall-of-Fame caliber career come to an end.

Nash continues to be banged up with nerve issues in his back and it may ultimately result in the veteran point guard’s retirement. Although retirement may be his only option, Nash remains reluctant to call it a career and wants to come back next season according to Mike Bresnahan of the L.A. Times:

Nash’s future with the Lakers remains uncertain to say the least. The veteran point guard failing to return to the floor in the final six weeks of the season won’t bode well for his status with the team.

Although it is unclear if the Lakers will ultimately use the stretch provision on Nash, it’d be safe to say the team will seriously consider it if he’s unable to get back on the floor this season.

In part two of “The Finish Line” documentary series by Grantland, Nash talked to his agent over the phone about the stretch provision. Nash admitted that the Lakers using the provision on him is the most likely scenario.
