When Byron Scott was hired this past summer to be head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, he spoke all about defense being the most important thing to him. It looks as if he has found another player with that same mindset.

On Sunday, the Lakers claimed center Tarik Black off waivers from the Houston Rockets. In speaking to the media, Black echoed Scott with his feelings towards defense according to Lakers Nation reporter Serena Winters:
Tarik Black sounds like Byron Scott: "Defense wins championships."

An undrafted rookie, Black seems to understand what his role is in the league. A guy focused solely on rebounding and protecting the rim can have a valuable role in this league and that is where Black will look to stand out.
He has only played in 25 games this season, but was solid for the Rockets, especially while Dwight Howard was injured. He even posted a double-double against the vaunted Memphis Grizzlies frontline earlier this season.
Where Black will fit in with this Lakers team remains to be seen. Ed Davis has begun to blossom in his starting role and Carlos Boozer is the best offensive big man on the team. Jordan Hill has struggled recently, but remains a good contributor so it is likely that Black will battle Robert Sacre for the remaining big man minutes.
If he shows that he can be a rim protector and bring the hustle and rebounding that Byron Scott loves, it won’t be long before Black is making an impact for the Lakers.
