VIDEO: Byron Scott Downplays Expectations For Jordan Clarkson

Los Angeles Lakers rookie Jordan Clarkson had another impressive performance, despite the team’s 21-point loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night. Not only did Clarkson rack up his second career double-double, he was also just three rebounds shy of a triple-double with 18 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and just one turnover in his 31 minutes of play.

Head coach Byron Scott said he wants to “keep everything in perspective when it comes to Jordan Clarkson.” Scott said he’s looking forward to Clarkson’s improvements in the upcoming summer league, continuing into training camp and next season. Scott did say Clarkson’s speed and surveying the floor is definitely improving.

He has a speed of about 150 miles per hour. A month ago it was probably 90 [miles per hour] and tonight it looked like it was 75. He slowed down and sees everything a lot easier and a lot clearer. The game is becoming easier for him,” Scott said after the game.

Scott also said although Clarkson makes normal rookie mistakes, he rarely makes the same mistake twice and generally follows Scott’s game plan. Scott used an example of pointing out a defensive mistake to Clarkson during the game, which Clarkson then adjusted on the next possession.

Over the last two games, Clarkson has averaged 22.0 points on 66.6 percent shooting with 10.5 assists, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and just two turnovers. Clarkson will have another chance to prove himself on Friday night as the Lakers take on Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers.
