VIDEO: Kobe Bryant, Coach Godwin Explain The Blackout Regimen

Kobe Bryant in the post vs Andre MillerEarlier today, Kobe Bryant changed his Twitter avatar to an all-black image while tweeting the hashtags #blackout and #bearhunt. As ambiguous as those hashtags may be, there have been theories popping up all over the place about the meaning of his tweet.

One of the theories that has made the most sense is that Bryant’s blackout hashtag has to do with the workout regimen that he’s discussed in the past. The LA Times’ Eric Pincus came across a video of Bryant talking about his blackout workout, in which he says that it includes “running, offensive drills, cardio and weightlifting.”

There was another video posted by Coach Godwin where he shares a story told by Kevin Eastman, one of the Clippers assistant coaches who was on Doc Rivers coaching staff on the Celtics. Eastman was asking Kobe about his workout and how he stays in shape, and Bryant said the following:

“I don’t work out. All of these young guys are more athletic and catching up to me. I blackout.”

What Bryant meant by that is that he just doesn’t work to stay in shape, but he works to come as close to perfecting his craft as possible. His blackout regimen isn’t just physical work, but also includes learning from others and thinking as a coach. Here’s what Bryant said he does, which almost always begins early in the morning.

1. I hit the track
2. I hit the weight room
3. I go to the gym
4. I learn something new
5. I see the game from the coaches perspective

Bryant also said, “I can watch a high school game, and if a kid makes a great move, I’m going to learn it.” He has no hang up on where he learns from, which is why he has such an expansive offensive repertoire. You can watch the Coach Godwin video below.
