VIDEO: Kobe Bryant’s Bond With Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong

In addition to playing at a high level on the court, Kobe Bryant has kept a close relationship with Los Angeles Lakers ownership throughout his 19 year career. His fondness isn’t just limited to the Buss family as he also maintains a strong bond with minority owner and renowned surgeon, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong.

CBS News profiled Dr. Soon-Shiong on 60 Minutes and explored the ties between Bryant and the doctor. Bryant and Dr. Soon-Shiong engage in a pregame routine where the Laker player hugs the minority owner before every game. Dr. Soon-Shiong also visits the team training room to talk to Bryant whenever he gets the chance.

Outside of his ownership role with the Lakers, Dr. Soon-Shiong is seen as a prominent figure in the medical community with the capability to shake up cancer and described as a “medical genius.”

Dr. Soon-Shiong became minority owner when he bought Magic Johnson’s shares in 2010 and has been named the wealthiest person in Los Angeles as well as the richest American in the healthcare industry.
