After averaging 35.4 points the previous season, Kobe Bryant would continue his strong individual performance as the team continued to struggle. During the season, Bryant was selected to his 9th All-Star Game appearance where he earned his second All-Star Most Valuable Player trophy after posting 31 points, 6 assists, and 6 steals. Bryant would go on another amazing scoring streak after the All-Star break as he became the first player since Wilt Chamberlain to score 50 points or more in four consecutive games. By the end of the season, he finished with a total of ten 50-plus point games, but the Lakers were eventually eliminated again in the first round by the Phoenix Suns.
