Was the Slam Dunk Contest Decided Before It Began?

Rumor has it that the 2011 NBA Slam Dunk Contest may not have been what everybody expected. While everybody was expecting Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin to be the star of the show, it appears that Griffin’s victory may have already been a forgone conclusion.

An official NBA press release that came out on 5:27 pm PST on Saturday, February 19th stated that five middle school students would get to showcase their dunking skills in front of 2011 NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion Blake Griffin. Now, this would all be completely normal behavior if the release wasn’t sent out over an hour before the dunk contest was scheduled to begin.

This reaffirms many people’s suspicions, myself included, that the event may have been fixed. Blake Griffin’s dunks were certainly spectacular, but in front of his home crowd at the Staples Center many believed he was going to take home the victory no matter the competition.
